Sample Blog: Benefits of Internal Recruitment for Companies

By Emma FISCHER (commissioned 2019)

Searching for the right candidate through a sea of resumes is no easy feat. Between verifying work history, calling references, and figuring out real work experience from exaggeration, it’s not simple to hire the right team. With internal recruitment, you can fill the vacancy with a candidate you already know, taking a lot of the uncertainty out of the hiring process while promoting within a company. Overall, it’s an effective team-building strategy for securing a strong company and work community that focuses on team loyalty in the quest for success.

Your Employees Know Your Company

Internal recruitment earns major points for selecting a candidate who is already familiar with the company and its unique work environment, goals, and standards. This allows for the candidate to flourish under company policy, while also eliminating some need for training due to the worker already being familiar with certain company operations. An added bonus is your worker has familiarized himself or herself with the company and appears to enjoy the work environment if they are seeking a continued future with the company. This ensures the happy partnership between employee and employer that is needed for joint success.

You Know Who You’re Hiring

Another advantage of internal recruitment is employers generally have a good understanding of their employees. You’re able to gauge how your employee performs and how the candidate interacts with coworkers and clients. There will be less of a learning curve when it comes to having your employee continue in their training process. There’s also a suggestion that internal recruitment will increase morale in the workplace by showing the existing employees that the company values their contribution and is willing to promote from within based on performance.

Your Company Saves Money

By filling vacancies with existing employees, the company can reduce training costs by instead focusing on transfers and promotions. A significant amount of both time and money can be saved by avoiding having to redo an entire company training policy. Though there will still be some changes to adapt to, hiring from within will greatly reduce this process. In addition, screenings and job postings can also be avoided. Screening for new candidates is a lengthy process and to stick with the tried and true platitude, time is money. You can save the cost of hiring managers, recruiters, and other third-party mediators.

Crafting Your Work Environment

Naysayers will argue that internal recruitment limits the option of new perspectives and creates workplace jealousy, but it should rather be viewed as an opportunity to recognize and award outstanding employees while providing opportunities for advancement. Workers seek to attach themselves to companies that are willing to grow with the individual and offer the opportunity for career growth. Rewarding employees based on experience and performance shows the office that management pays attention to and acknowledges work. Additionally, fresh faces can be brought in to fill existing positions if needed. This allows for new ideas to mingle while still lessening the training process since it will be easier to have existing employees fill upper management positions and then train whoever takes over their old position rather than hire a new upper management employee from the start

Satisfying Statistics

Overall, there are several specific benefits of using internal recruitment hiring methods. In comparison to external recruitment methods, internal recruitment guarantees a better culture fit for employees, higher initial worker performance, lower cost to hire, lower salary costs, reduced hiring time, and less of a turnover. To understand what the process sacrifices, external hiring favors staff growth, workplace diversity, increased technical expertise, new ideas, and the inclusion of new college grads. However, regardless of whichever recruitment strategy is chosen, the downsides can be overcome. The fundamental goal of recruitment is to determine which candidates will be a success for the company, and hiring from within allows for candidates who are already familiar with and likely satisfied with their work environment to be promoted.

Sample Blog: Everything You Need To Know About Androgenetic Alopecia & Treatment Options

By Emma FISCHER (commissioned 2023)

Are you experiencing defined baldness in your temple or thinning in your hair? Learn about androgenetic alopecia and discover treatments that can help restore your hairline.

Baldness occurs in many forms due to numerous conditions. Androgenetic alopecia is one common hair loss condition that causes both men and women to experience balding. Also known as male-pattern baldness or female-pattern baldness, androgenetic alopecia is a well-known hair loss condition that fortunately now has treatment solutions for both men and women.

What Is Androgenetic Alopecia?

Androgenetic alopecia affects men and women differently. Medline Plus describes it as a well-defined, patterned hair loss that begins above both temples. The hairline starts to recede over time, forming an “M” shape for men. Hair can also thin around the crown at the top of the head. This can progress to either partial or complete baldness over time. Women tend to experience a thinning of hair over the entire head rather than a receding hairline. They are often not affected by complete baldness.

How serious is androgenetic alopecia? androgenetic alopecia is a common cause of hair loss for both men and women. For some people, the stress of hair loss can impact self-esteem and self-image. However, androgenetic alopecia is also associated with several medical conditions. For men, these include coronary heart disease, an enlarged prostate, prostate cancer, insulin resistance disorders, and high blood pressure. Women with hair loss due to androgenetic alopecia face a higher risk of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

What Are My Androgenetic Alopecia Treatment Options?

Androgenetic alopecia is likely caused by a mixture of genetic and environmental factors. It is currently unclear if it is inherited, as many factors can influence the condition. However, some solutions can help both men and women who experience androgenetic alopecia. Both topical and oral medications are prescribed for androgenetic alopecia. These treatment options are preventative measures that can stop the progression of hair loss. However, they require daily usage and carry numerous side effects.

Hair transplantation is a permanent solution for androgenetic alopecia. The hair transplant process involves moving healthy hair follicles from the back of the head. They are then implanted in the areas affected by androgenetic alopecia. Hair transplantation often is only needed once to provide permanent solutions to males and females who deal with hair loss and thinning. Hair transplants can also restore hair loss due to injury.

Sample Blog: A Question of Appropriation: How Braiding Culture Breeds Identity

By Emma Polini for I&I Hair Salon (2019)

Black girl braids are iconic, whether they are Janet Jackson’s 1993 Poetic Justice boxed braids or Beyoncé breaking the bar with her fierce cornrows on the cover of Lemonade. Hair is an extension of identity, with African hair braiding serving as a way to celebrate heritage and culture while also allowing for self-expression. With hair braiding traced back to Africa in 3,500 B.C., braids have held a significant societal and cultural status for five thousand years, serving as a way to indicate aspects such as status and social standing, retain identity and culture in the New World, and even create maps to freedom during the Transatlantic Slave Trade. It’s no surprise that braiding culture remains a pivotal part of the African-American community to this day.

Braids & Identity

When slaves were taken to the New World, many were faced with shaven heads—the loss of yet another aspect of identity. The ability to regrown hair and wear it in traditional styles was symbolic of the resilience of the enslaved Africans and their refusal to forgo their culture. Braids continue to be worn to this day as a way to celebrate heritage and remember roots. With braids having served such a crucial role in shaping identity and celebrating heritage, the braid is still highly symbolic of pride, freedom, and cultural celebration.

Though black hairstyles were overlooked by society for decades, braids have earned mainstream media attention due to non-black celebrities—including Miley Cyrus, Kylie Jenner, and Katy Perry—making public appearances in styles derived from traditional African braids. Though there is certainly no issue with appreciating and celebrating other cultures, issues arise when such public figures use the braid as a mere statement of fashion that disregards the history of braiding and the struggle of the African people to retain their heritage—a vital element of the braid that is missing when non-black celebrities adopt the look on the red carpet.

The modern braid at times is not only stripped of cultural significance, but it also disregards the struggle of African-Americans to retain their identity. Braiding culture is an aspect of black culture that African-Americans have fought to retain and celebrate, facing decades of hostility and discrimination. When non-black figures borrow African hair braiding as a fashion statement, this both insults and undermines the effort of the African voice to be heard.

Avoiding Appropriation

The question of cultural appropriation arises due to the difference in the ways braids are viewed in cultures and societies. While beautiful black girl braids express the struggle and history of African-Americans to reclaim and celebrate their identity in the face of adversity, this reality doesn’t exist when celebrities of other races don African braids in order to capture a certain look for the night. Problems further arise when famous individuals are praised for their braids and labeled daring style icons, while the same exact look has received ridicule, scorn, and a labeling of “ghetto” for countless other African-American women who have been wearing African braids for decades.

This does not mean that African hair braiding can only be enjoyed by black figures. It simply serves as a reminder that other aspects need to be considered before non-black individuals consider styles such as boxed braids or cornrows. A key aspect of determining whether or not it is appropriate to experiment with hair braiding is intention—something that is critical to consider when deciding on adapting any aspect of a different culture, especially for aesthetic purposes.

If you admire a visual aspect of a different culture and copy it to capitalize on a trend, you are overlooking the significance of the style in its social setting. However, if individuals take the time and effort to educate themselves about the history of certain looks and then choose to rock the look tastefully as a way to celebrate or honor the culture, there is nothing wrong with that.

The Verdict

In order to avoid the perils of cultural appropriation, people need to educate themselves on the styles they admire, and make sure to credit the original source of inspiration. We cannot allow the history and culture of the style to be overlooked. The key terms to consider when it comes to braiding culture are intent and education. What are you hoping to achieve by wearing this look, and what message do you wish to send?

The takeaway message is this: braids are a beautiful look. African hair braiding has been celebrated for five thousand years and counting for a reason. Braids are enjoyed all over by men, women, and children— and the truth is anyone of any color has the right to rock braids if they respect the braid and understand the significance of braiding culture and the history behind it.

Sample Blog: Earthquake Effects and the Need for Seismic Retrofitting

By Emma Polini for California Foundation Works (2019)

There are many appealing aspects of settling down in Southern California, but earthquakes are certainly not one of them. While major earthquakes clearly pose visible threats to a building’s foundation, minor cases of seismic activity can also wreak havoc on your foundation in less obvious ways. In order to preserve your property value and keep your loved ones safe, it’s essential to understand the damage that earthquakes pose, spot the signs of damage, and secure your home against the threat of seismic destruction.

How do earthquakes damage homes?

In any situation in which the ground shifts beneath a home, damage can occur. That means that even a minor earthquake can unsettle your home and upset your foundation if your building is not properly retrofitted. An unsettled foundation can cause your home to shift, slant, or event slide off the property in extreme causes. It can also lead to a host of interior and exterior house issues, such as foundation cracks and warped floors that can lead to serious issues for the homeowner if left untreated. It’s important for homeowners to understand that even minor earthquakes can cause damage, so inspections are necessary for keeping your foundation protected. If your foundation has sustained damage, you will need professional help to resolve the issue and prevent future damage.

How can homeowners prevent against damage?

While some cases of serious earthquake damage is apparent to the naked eye, mild damage can often go undetected. This can cause problems that would have been relatively easy to fix if caught early to worsen over time and lead to more extensive and costly repairs. That’s why it’s extremely important to be vigilant about checking your home for signs of foundation damage after seismic activity, no matter how minor the earthquake. The most cost effective way to keep your home safe is to be proactive, catch damages early on, and connect with a contractor to discuss repair options. While our contractors are happy to provide free foundation inspections, there are also signs that homeowners can be on the lookout for before they call in the professionals.

What are foundation damage warning signs?

One of the most visible signs of foundation damage are cracks, which can be located in both the home’s exterior and interior. Exterior foundation cracks of large dimensions are often linked to foundation damage. Be on the lookout for unusually large cracks or horizontal cracks, which could be a sign of foundation movement. Visible slants in floors, ceilings, walls, and the general appearance of the house itself can indicate that the foundation is leaning or shifting, which is a sign of major foundation damage. Broken bricks or blocks, if these materials are used in your foundation, are also possible indicators of damage. If you notice any of these signs, it’s crucial to call in professional help so that the root of the issues can be understood. If it is determined that your issues are linked to foundation damage, then appropriate steps must be taken to fortify your home.

What are earthquake retrofitting solutions?

The good news is that with the right professional help, retrofitting your home against the destruction of earthquakes is a more than manageable task. Earthquake retrofitting is a necessity for Southern California building owners. Popular solutions include cripple wall bracing, foundation bolting, and attaching the floor to braced cripple walls. These forms of fortification will prevent the home from shifting or sliding in the event of seismic activity, allowing the homeowner to rest easy with the knowledge that their building is secured. In order to determine which solution, or solutions, are best for your unique sitation, a professional will need to evaluate your home and determine the most effective course of action.

Sample Blog: Can Dogs Eat Olives? Olive the Answers

By Emma Polini for www.candogseatbananas.com (2019)

Some foods only enjoy ripeness at select times of the year, while others are able to make their way onto the table year round. One item that many households keep throughout all seasons is the olive. While some enjoy it as an hors d’ouevre or a meal addition, many also use olive oil in a variety of meals. This means that it’s likely you’re dog has snuck a taste or two of olive products by now. But can dogs eat olives? Today we will find out how this fruit fares for canines.

Can Dogs Eat Olives?

Picture this scenario: you’re enjoying a Greek salad. You go to stab an olive with your fork, but it slips off and rolls under the table. Before you know it, your dog has gobbled it up. Should you be worried?

Can dogs eat olives? Fear not, it turns out dogs can enjoy olives. Of course, olive consumption comes with guidelines for canines, and dogs cannot eat just any olive. However, you might be surprised by the many benefits of such a small snack.

How to Serve Dogs Olives

Before we delve into olive benefits, it’s important to establish serving safety. Olives contain pits, which provide a choking hazard to dogs. Therefore, you must always remove the pit before serving your dog olives. Luckily this is an easy obstacle to navigate.

It may be trickier to keep the sodium content of olives low enough for dogs. Since dogs should not consume extra sodium, they must only be served unsalted, plain olives. This makes both canned and pickled olives off limits to dogs. In addition, many olive products and forms of commercial olives are also banned for dogs due to added sodium and spices.

So what olives can dogs have? Dogs can only eat the freshest and most natural form of olives. This means you will have to search around a bit for organic olives. Unfortunately the more common olive products won’t make the health cut for canines.

In case you were wondering if black or green olives are better for your furry friend, both options are equally safe. The important part is finding fresh, plain olives that don’t contain any added spices. That might be tricker than you think. Since olives naturally are high in sodium and fat, be sure to limit olive consumption to serving 1-2 as an occasional snack.

Are Olives Good for Dogs?

So why serve natural olives in the first place? The good news is olives contain many wonderful health benefits.

Let’s unpack some goodness. Did you know that olives are a good source of both protein and calcium? They contain healthy fat that aids in lowering cholesterol, as well as vitamins A, E, and K. Olives are also a high-antioxidant food

So how do these benefits translate to dogs? Olives can help improve their vision, bone health, and coat condition. They also help against fighting forms of cancer and bodily inflammations. Olives can also help to lower high blood pressure.

Olives are really stacking up to be a superfood. In addition to these benefits, olives can also boost heart health, lower the risk for obesity and diabetes, help fight infections, and prevent osteoporosis. These are some pretty fantastic results from a bite-sized treat. You might want to think twice before offering your dog a Milk Bone instead.

Just remember that even though olives are vastly nutritious, you should only ever serve them to your dog in moderation. Dogs still need to get the majority of their calories through animal protein, and snacks such as olives should only make up a very small portion of their diet.

What About Olive Oil?

Now that we’ve answered “can dogs eat olives,” let’s see how olive oil fares for dogs. It turns out that dogs can enjoy olive oil as well, as long as it is served in strict moderation.

Before you consider adding olive oil into your dog’s food be sure to consult your vet for proper serving amounts based on your dog’s weight. You won’t regret drizzling a bit of oil over your pup’s kibble.

Olive oil can assist dogs in losing weight, and it could even help extend your dog’s life. Olive oil promotes canine health and boosts immune system defenses. It is also a brain food that provides a doggie energy boost. Looking for one last bonus? You can use olive oil for superficial reasons too. It can improve your dog’s coat by giving it a healthy shine.

Olive in Review

Can dogs eat olives? Hopefully all of your questions have been answered. Yes, dogs can eat olives. However, they cannot eat any salted or spiced olives, which reduces olive consumption to only fresh, plain olives. Both olives and olive oil are wonderfully beneficial when served in moderation.
